Strabag SpA has awarded Pöyry with an engineering services assignment for the Alto Maipo hydropower project located in the Maipo river basin in Chile. The assignment includes a review of constructability and preliminary engineering, detail design and preparation of tender documents for hydromechanical and electrical works, operation & maintenance manuals and site supervision during installation and commissioning.
The Alto Maipo hydropower project consists of two run-of-the-river hydroelectric plants with a total capacity of 531 MW. Construction of the 267 MW Las Lajas plant and 264 MW Alfalfal II plant began in the fourth quarter, 2013. The plants are expected to be commissioned in 2019. Alto Maipo SpA, a subsidiary of the Chilean-based AES Gener and the US-based AES Corporation, part of the Chilean tunnelling division of Strabag SE has secured a EUR385,2 million (USD 490 million) design and build contract for the majority of the tunneling and civil works of the Alto Maipo Hydroelectrical Power Plant, located 50 km southeast of Santiago, in the high Maipo River basin of the municipal district of San José de Maipo. This area is situated in the Andes close to the Argentinean border with peaks up to 6,500 m. The Alto Maipo project includes the two hydroelectric plants Alfalfal II and Las Lajas for a total of 531MW. 46.5km of tunnel and shafts will be excavated by drill and blast as well as by tunnel boring machines. In November 2012, Strabag announced it had been awarded the
contract to build a part of the Alto Maipo hydropower complex 50 km southeast
of Santiago de Chile. Difficult technical conditions and the withdrawal of a
contractor led the client, AES Gener, to negotiate a new EUR800 million construction agreement
with Strabag Spa of Chile for the Yeso/Volcan System construction section for
the Alto Maipo hydropower complex. The agreement had been pending the bank
financing and therefore became effective on 08.05.2018. The contract comprises
the construction of tunnels with a total length of 73 km. The hydropower plant
will have a total installed capacity of 530 MW.
