Second Sangaldam breakthrough

Second Sangaldam breakthroughWork is progressing well on the Katra-Qazigund section of the Kashmir railway, with the second tunnel breaking through at Sangaldam in the Ramban district of the valley. The section is 129 km-long, with 103 km in 70 tunnels. The first tunnel, completed on 29.07.2010, is 1.67 km-long. The second tunnel holed on 03.12.2010 is 1.48 km-long and took 28 months using drill/blast from both ends in difficult Muree formation geology. The 119 km-long Qazigund-Baramulla section was the first part of the Kashmir railway to be completed, and train services were introduced this year.
