Expressions of Interest Extended to End April for L-SURFIn March 2005, the EU launched L-SURF, which stands for Large-Scale Underground Research Facility, a planning and organization project for a major underground research and training facility. It is a EU-funded three-year feasibility study on safety and security of enclosed underground spaces, which is part of the Sixth Framework Programme. L-SURF aims at providing a vehicle on the path to further internationalization of research on safety and security. The programme is coordinated by VSH (Hagerbach Test Gallery, Switzerland), with the following partners: INERIS (public research institute on industrial environment and risks, France), SINTEF NBL (Norwegian Fire Research Laboratory), SP Fire (Swedish National Testing and Research Institute), STUVA (German Research Association for Underground Transportation Facilities) and TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research). Interested parties are invited to express their interest until end-April. To fill in the questionnaire and read more about the project, visit

first-eoi@l-surf.orgIn mid-2006, a second expression of interest will be published, aiming at detailling possible scenarios to structure research and collaborate within L-SURF. Based on the response for such a facility, the project will propose and initiate a legal entity, which will act as L-SURF starting in 2008.Other past and present European research projects include UPTUN (read
