Metro

COMET jv driving 3.5 km of tunnels using NFM TBMs; 1 km NATM; and 500 m cut-and-cover. March 1999.NFM reports its two 5.71 m-diameter EPBs have recorded best day of 53 m, best week of 154 m, and best month of 567 m on 5 day/week production. Visit www.framatome.fr October 2000.Negotiated procedure, deadline 4th December, 2006 for engineering related to multi-disciplinary civil works (MCW) and multi-disciplinary transportation systems (MTS) for the Copenhagen metro's Circle Line. These two notices to prequalify for the two main consultancy assignments mark the commencement of preparatory actions handled by Orestad Development. Six teams of consultants are expected to be prequalified for each assignment before Christmas. They will then be asked to submit tenders by February 2007 and consultancy contracts are expected to be completed by July for immediate commencement of the work. At the same time the legal acts behind the Circle Line project are being processed by the Danish Parliament. The present planning basis for the project is the preliminary studies completed and reported by May 2005, which are made public by the Ministry of Transport and Energy. The reports can be downloaded (in Danish) from www.m.dk under "Om metro", "Cityring", "Hent materiale".Both consultants will be the owner's consultant through the design and procurement phases including design follow-up during construction. The MCW consultant will act on civil works, building works and related road works, i.e. all tunnel and stations. The MTS consultant will act on all railway system facilities, the rolling stock and the control and maintenance centre (CMC).The Circle Line is 15.5 km long, all underground double tunnel plus 1 km connection tunnel to the CMC, also double tube. The diameter is expected to be 4.9 m identical to the present Copenhagen metro tunnel diameter. There will be 17 stations, all underground. Tunnelling will be, to the possible extent, within the Copenhagen limestone, but it will have to pass areas of different geology at some sections. TBMs are anticipated for tunnelling. Precast concrete segments were applied for the present metro tunnel within the same type of geology. Contractors are expected to be invited to prequalify in late 2008. The planned construction start is scheduled by 2010, for service by 2018. Approved budget is DKK15 billion with a 50% probability. Oresund Strait

Second Oresund crossing by 4 km-long bored or immersed tube proposed to connect with Helsingborg, Sweden. First crossing on schedule for opening late-2000. August 1998.Feasibility study by Scandiaconsult and Cowi has proposed a second, single-tube, rail-only Oresund link between Helsingborg, Sweden and Helsingor, Denmark. Hydro

Aquatic Sciences Inc. (ASI) reports that it has assisted with the successful completion of emergency repair work on the pressure equalization piping at the Sabana Yegua Dam for the Corporacií³n Dominicana de Electricidad (CDE) in the Dominican Republic. A control valve had been seriously damaged while operating under emergency conditions during Hurricane Georges. Further damage to the dam itself and the potential for serious flooding of the valley downstream required an effective and immediate solution. ASI used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to insert a sealing plug from within the flooded tunnel, allowing CDE personnel to remove the piping and permanently weld a cap over the system downstream. Hydro

Odebrecht is building the San Francisco hydro scheme, located downstream of the existing Agoyan power plant, on the left bank of the Pastaza river, on the border between Tungurahua and Pastaza provinces in central Ecuador. The project will make use of water discharged from the Agoyan power plant and diverted from the Verde river. Interconnection is made through a 60 m-long tunnel linking to an underground interconnecting chamber, from which a 11.3 km-long 7 m-diameter headrace tunnel will connect to a surge tank. Before reaching the surge tank, the penstock tunnel divides in two vertical stretches, with the upper concrete-lined section connecting with the surge tank and the lower steel-lined stretch connecting with the two generators in the 230 MW underground power house. The water will be discharged into the Pastaza river through a low pressure tunnel. Conelec, the national electricity authority, awarded the contract in March 2000 to Hidropastaza, a joint company controlled by Hidro Agoyan (80%) and Odebrecht (20%). The concession company will build the project under a 30-year BOT concession agreement for USD306 million. Construction to take five years. As of March, 2005 the underground powerhouse has been excavated. The tunnel will be excavated by a 7 m-diameter Wirth double shield TBM, which will be operated by SELI under the supervision of Odebrecht.
