The tunnel is approximately 10.8 km long and consists of two single-track tubes. It connects to the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel 1 and extends to the south portal Litti near Baar. The company PORR secured the EUR400 million (PLN 1.7 billion), excluding VAT, contract for the construction of a 4.6 km long, 14-m wide High-Speed Rail (HSR) tunnel, running from the Retkinia launch shaft to the Fabryczna exit shaft in Lodz. The long-distance tunnel in Łodz, a key part of railway line n. 85 - the so-called Y line, will allow high-speed trains to pass under the city centre at depths of 25-35 m, ensuring fast connections between Warsaw, Sieradz, Wrocław and Poznan. The tunnel will be the longest and widest rail tunnel in Poland to be constructed in a single section using a TBM (3,200 t with a 14m-diameter cutterhead).
