Click es/124. 25/05.Open call for bids, deadline 21st March, 2006 for design of sections A to E of the new Jucar-Vinalopo aqueduct and connection with section V on the lower course of the Jucar river. The European Commission had conditioned a EUR80 million financing for the Jucar-Vinalopo water transfer to a new revision of the project. The modified project has required or will require to cancel the contracts previously signed with the successful bidders, who will receive compensation. Click here. The new Jucar-Vinalopo route takes advantage of sections V, VI and VII of the old alignment and re-uses section I, which will generate energy. With respect to sections II, III and IV, construction had not begun and the TBMs purchased to drive the tunnels within the previous scheme will be operated to drive the tunnels of the revised aqueduct (13 km in total). Click here. The new route has been divided into five sections (A to E). It is more environmentally friendly since it reduces to the minimum the impact on protected zones and contributes to safeguard the Vinalopo aquifers. Actually, the new water line will cross only 3.2 km of protected areas listed by the EU, while the previous alignment planned to cross 44.7 km of such areas. The total budget of the Jucar-Vinalopo water transfer is EUR225.6 million. Visit www.aguas-jucar.esSections A, D and E have no tunnels. Section B includes the Sierra de Corbera tunnel (2,720 m), which begins the first gravity stretch, and the Barxeta tunnel (2,950 m). The budget amounts to EUR43.8 million. Section C requires to bore the Sierra Requena tunnel (3,540 m) and the Sierra Grossa tunnel (3,920 m). The budget totals EUR49.7 million. The bidding stipulates a 4-month time frame for the project design and 20 months for construction. Out of these 20 months, it is estimated 18 months will be necessary for the construction of each section. The new Jucar-Vinalopo aqueduct could be concluded at the end of 2008. Click es/124. Open invitation to tender, deadline 5th September, 2004 for execution of seven boreholes for geological investigation totalling 1,750 m in length at a maximum water depth of 300 m and with maximum penetration of 350 m below the seabed. E-mail froca@secegsa.com 02/06.A JV of Typsa, Lombardi, Ingema and Geodata has won the contract for the preliminary design and environment impact study for the 40 km railway tunnel between Europe and Africa running under the Strait of Gibraltar. Typsa leads and manages the JV and is responsible for the EIS while Lombardi is the leader for the technical project. The JV has one year to draw up the plans for one of the most complex projects of its kind ever. Preliminary studies should be finished by 2008. If the project goes ahead, it will be a close cousin of the Eurotunnel that runs under the Channel between France and Britain. Running at depths of 300 to 600 metres, it will connect Tarifa in Spain to Tangiers in Morocco. A 4.8 m-wide service tunnel will be built first. This tube should help the engineers figure how much water might leak into the tunnel. The pressure on the tunnel will be huge, approximately 500 tonnes per square metre, so powerful pumps will be needed to avoid it filling up with water. Another problem is the risk of earthquakes in an active seismological zone. Read E-News Weekly 30/2005 & 5/2005. Click here. Visit www.paymacotas.com and www.payject.com 49/03.Open call for tenders, deadline 7th November, 2006 for construction of Olesa de Montserrat-Viladecavalls section on Barcelona's orbital highway B-40. The section crosses the En Ribes mountain through a tunnel following a 1,550 m curved radius, with a transition curve featuring a gradient limited to 3%. This 1,264 m tunnel, whereof 1,122 metres will be mined, is formed by two bores separated by two diameters (35 m). The roadway section has a clearance of 5 metres and an outer cross section of 226.17 sq m per tube. The German method will be used, by building first sidewall tunnels strongly reinforced and lined. Then, the top heading will be driven. Its reinforcement will rest on the walls of these tunnels. Lastly, the central bench will be dug and the invert. At the exit of the tunnel, cut-and-cover stretches wil lbe displayed to mitigate the visual impact of the tunnel.
