19/02/2010
Major collapse at Gilgel-Gibe hydro Gilgel-Gibe hydroelectric power plant is located in the Great African Rift Valley region of Ethiopia. It’s 26 km-long headrace tunnel cuts through heterogeneous and complex geological formations. It required the highest construction standards, and is an outstanding engineering achievement. However, some three months after commissioning, a collapse has occurred over 15 m of the tunnel at point pk 8.980 from the outlet portal. As a result, the plant, inaugurated on 13.01.2010, has been closed for repairs. Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCO) has appointed Salini Costruttori, SELI and a team of expert consultants to establish the cause of this event, and to institute repair measures.
