On the 06/05/2020 Deutsche Bahn reached another important milestone as part of the Stuttgart 21 project, by breaking through the east tube of the 9.5-km-long Filder tunnel: the last of four tunnels for the future main train station.

The planning of the slab track will start this month as a ballast less track system was developed by PORR and ÖBB was chosen for this tunnel.  The tunnel will make the connection between the future main station and Stuttgart Airport particularly quick: the journey time will be only eight minutes instead of the 27 minutes today.  Stuttgart 21 is part of the complete reorganization of the Stuttgart railway node.

The joint project was concluded in 2009 with the financing contract from the federal government, the state of Baden-Württemberg, the state capital of Stuttgart, the Stuttgart region, Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH and Deutsche Bahn. The project includes the construction of four new stations, 57 km of new rail tracks, 59 km of tunnels and 44 bridges.
