Crossrail - Celebrated Completion of tunneling marathon
On 04.06.2015, Prime Minister David Cameron and Mayor of London Boris Johnson celebrated the completion of the Crossrail tunnels. The tunnelling marathon under London began in May, 2012 and ended at Farringdon with the arrival of TBMs Victoria on 26.05.2015 and Elisabeth on 11.05.2015.
Five twin-bore tunnel drives were undertaken to complete the link: from Royal Oak to Farringdon (6.8 km); from Limmo to Farringdon (8.3 km); from Pudding Mill Lane to Stepney Green (2.7 km); from Limmo to Victoria Dock Portal (0.9 km); from Plumstead to North Woolwich (2.9 km).
Farringdon is one of ten new Crossrail stations being built in central London, Docklands and southeast London. The new station will have connections to both London Underground and Thameslink. Farringdon will have the longest platforms on Crossrail at 350 m so that passengers can connect to both Farringdon and Barbican Tube stations. Crossrail construction commenced in 2009 at Canary Wharf, and is now 65 percent complete. Services through central London will commence in 2018. Click
