Proposed 8.5 km tunnel to improve route between Dir and Chitral which is currently impassable for six months of the year. Sweden has provided $2.4 million for detailed engineering design. Previous tunnel attempt 30 years ago collapsed under construction following water inflow. March 1997.   Sweden and Japan have expressed interest in financing and execution of the project. Visit www.geoconsult.at 26/03.The National Highway Authority (NHA) signed a Rs8 billion contract with Korean company Sambu for the construction of the much-awaited 8.8 km-long 7.55 m-wide 7.15 m-high Lowari tunnel. The tunnel will connect Chitral valley and other parts of the country through the 3,110 m Lowari Pass between Dir and Mirkhani in Chitral. The first feasibility of the tunnel was carried out in 1955 while work on the project was started in 1975 by the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO). But the project went into trouble and ultimately work was abandoned. Work on the project was restarted in 1995 but could not be continued. The project will be completed in three years. The JV led by SELI Spa and including the Spanish firm OSSA (Obras Subterraneas SA) and the Swiss engineering company, Lombardi Engineering, has signed a EUR39 million design-build contract for urgent repair of the Esti headrace water tunnel located in the Chiriqui region of Panama, 25 km from the city of David between Boquete and Gaulaca. The contract involves major repairs and relining of the 4.7 km-long, 9 m-diameter pressure tunnel, which has collapsed in several places. Expected date of completion is 01.05.2012.   Electron Investment SA (EISA), the Panamanian electric company, has selected the main contractors for the Pando and Monte Lirio hydroelectric power projects located in the upstream section of the Chiriqui Viejo River basin, on the western side of Panama.The Italian company, SELI SpA, secured the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract, value EUR77 million (USD105 million), for the design and construction of the 5,161 m and 7,878 m-long hydraulic tunnels, the two surge tanks of 62 m and 73 m in height, and the tunnel lining of 25 cm-thick precast concrete segments. The Spanish company, Cobra Infraestructuras-hidraulicas S.A, secured the EPC contract, value EUR107 million (USD147.5 million), for the design and construction of the remaining civil works, inclusive of the access roads, dams, powerhouses, penstock structures and for the powerhouse substations. Poyry has been awarded a EUR2.1 million contract to provide specialized technical assistance to the project management consortium designing and constructing Line 1 of Panama metro, the first to be built in Central America. Poyry earlier advised on basic design, bidding and support during the award process. The completed metro line will be 13.7 km-long, with 7 km underground and 5 km elevated, and will have 11 stations. At the end of May 2021 Metro de Panama opened the offers received  from four groups for the design and basic details  for the tunnel of Metro line 3 to be built below the Panama Canal. The tunnel will be 5.3km long, with a 13 m diameter and at a 65 m maximum depth. The Consortium Tunel de Las Americas, composed of Tecnica y Proyectos  SA (Typsa) and Louis Berger LAC, obtained the best rating with a EUR11.02 million (USD9.86 million/PAB9.86 million) offer. But the consortiums Aecom-Sener Tunel Linea 3 and Ayesa-ILF  objected and sent their observations to the authority. The South Korean HPH Joint Venture, composed of Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co, POSCO and Hyundai Engineering Co have granted to China Railway Tunnel Group (CRTG) the excavation by TBM of the 5.3 km underwater section between the Panama Pacífico and Albrook stations of the Metro Line 3 in Panama. The tunnel will be built under the Panama Canal, on the Pacific side. Work on Phase 1 - the 25km, 14 station section from Albrook to Ciudad del Futuro - commenced in February 2022 and it is expected to be opened in 2026. 

The Panama metro line 3 will be 34km-long and mostly elevated monorail line. It will establish a connection between Panama City and major urban centres in the province of Panama Oeste such as Arraijan and at Phase 2, La Chorrera. Visit https://www.elmetrodepanama.com. 35/23.

Call for expressions of interest, deadline 20th April, 2007 for engineering services for the construction, supervision and management of the second stage of the Panama City and Bay of Panama sewage project. The consultant will be needed to help analyze proposals from firms bidding to carry out works for this phase, which will include the construction of a 7 km wastewater interceptor tunnel, as well as a wastewater treatment plant and pumping station in the Juan Diaz municipality, immediately outside of capital Panama City. These works will be awarded in two separate contracts, one for the interceptor tunnel, and another for the treatment plant and pumping station, both slated for awarding by year-end. After these expressions of intent are received, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) will evaluate the proposals and come up with a short list of companies to be submitted to project backer, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for approval. The JBIC recently signed an agreement with Minsa for a USD167 million loan to fund this phase of the project. The services will last for eight years from the second semester of the year, when construction of the tunnel and treatment plant is scheduled to commence. The tunnel will be a turnkey project so that the diameter, depth and tunnelling methodology details can still change. However, some details will be given in the prequalification notices scheduled within the next 60 days.
