The Austrian and Croatian consortium of Strabag (63,4%) and Koncar (36,6%) has been awarded the EUR57 million contract to build the Vranduk power plant on the river Bosna on behalf of energy supply company JP Elektroprivreda BiH. Since June, the army has been working on building a dam and two canals to transport river waters to pumping stations near Cabrobí³ municipality in Pernambuco state. However, the regional federal court had halted works on 10th December, as requested by the public prosecutor's office, which cited supposed irregularities in the national water council's original approval of the process. The federal supreme court ruled that going ahead with the project now would not cause irreversible environmental damage. The decision, however, only allows work to go ahead until the supreme court can judge the merits of the case at a date yet to be set. The project involves moving the Sí£o Francisco river, South America's fourth biggest, in the northern arid states of Pernambuco, Cearí¡, Paraí­ba and Rio Grande do Norte where water is to be used above all for sugar-cane and fruit plantations, prawn farms and the steel industry in the area of Fortaleza. Metro Line 4

  Extension from Paulista through Republica to Luz under the city centre commenced and conversion of two suburban railway lines to metro operations under consideration by secretary for metropolitan transport. Existing metro network will increase by 85 km to 134 km by 2004. April 1999. Suburban rail authority Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos reports that construction is pushing ahead on the first stage of Sao Paulo metro Line 5 to serve six stations with 6.7 km elevated, 2 km at grade and 0.7 km underground for completion 2002. The line will later be extended to Embuacu on Line 2 via an interchange with Line 1 at Santa Cruz. December 1999.   Prequalification bids have been invited by the end of May, 2000 for construction of the 13.5 km-long underground section of Line 4, part-financed by the World Bank and Brazil's National Bank for Economic & Social Development with the balance from the private sector on a modified BOT basis. The US$2 billion, 12-station line will run from Luz in the city centre to the southwest and is expected to carry about one million passengers a day. The winning private-sector company will build the line and then operate it and keep the profits for a period to be negotiated before handing over all fixed and moving assets. January 2000.   Prequalification for the 12.8 km Yellow Line 4 between Luz and Pí¡tio Vila Sônia. 10.3 km to be shield-driven, of which 5.2 km in soft soil and rock between Fradique Coutinho and Vila Sônia plus 5.1 km in soft soil only between Fradique Coutinho and Luz. Also 1.6 km in NATM and 800 metres in cut-and-cover. First phase, to be completed in 2006, includes five stations in Luz, Repíºblica, Paulista, Pinheiros, and Butantí£ for US$934 million. All stations in NATM except Repíºblica. Prequalifiers to be disclosed on 21st March, 2002. Awarding expected for June, 2002. Second phase includes stations in Higiení³polis, Oscar Freire, Fradique Coutinho, Faria Lima, Tríªs Poderes, and Morumbi. Civil works represent 60%, financed by the World Bank, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, and the State Treasure. Finishing works, systems and rolling stock to be financed under a 30-year BOT agreement. Total cost of US$1.3 billion. The decision gives the company time to answer the 700 queries regarding the tender process and to sort out legal proceedings from companies who failed to prequalify. An extension of the line to Taboao da Serra is under study.   Plans for three line system totalling 52 km with 49 stations have been resuscitated. Design requires 11 km of single and twin-track EPB tunnel and nine underground stations using NATM techniques. Mixed ground comprises sand, gravel and clay. Tunnel diameters 5.2 m and 9.2 m. Sept 1999.Taisei won the bid for the construction of a 2.4 km extension from downtown Sveta Nedelya square to the southward Dragan Tsankov Boulevard on line 1. Taisei will bore 4.8 km of twin tunnel and will build two stations, one at Sofia University and one at the Bulgarian National Radio. The contract is worth USD83.4 million. Financing by the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation. The extension is due for delivery by October 2007. The 12 km metro line 1 has eight stations at the moment. The addition by 2007 will extend the length to 15 km. Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx have awarded a fixed-price contract to Ontario Transit Group for EUR 4.44 bn (CAD6 bn) to design, build and finance the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations and Tunnel (South Civil) package.  

The Ontario Transit Group team includes: 

Applicant Lead: Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc., VINCI Construction Grands Projets 

Design Team: AECOM Canada Ltd., COWI North America Ltd., GHD Limited, SENER Group 

Construction Team: Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc., Janin Atlas Inc.

The team will begin mobilizing its design and construction crews, with major works to commence in early 2023. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.  

Scope of work for the Ontario Line South Civil design-build-finance package includes:  

  • A 6km tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River) 
  • Groundworks required to build the tunnels and stations; utility and conduit works to prepare for the RSSOM mechanical and electrical systems; guideway structures and facilities to prepare for the track structure to be installed by the RSSOM contractor 
  • Stations: 
    • One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station 
    • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queens subway stations 
    • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown) 

The Ontario Line project is being delivered through various P3, progressive design-build and traditional procurement contracts, which are all being staged accordingly for their successful delivery.  

The Ontario Line will be a 15.6-km new rapid transit line running between the Ontario Science Centre and Exhibition/Ontario Place in Toronto, with 15 stations, including six interchange stations.
