On the 21st of August a summit to establish the
next steps for the construction of the 2.5km road tunnel under Monte Tondo was
held. The interested parties were the Municipality, the Province of Bolzano and
the representatives of the Municipalities involved in the building of the
tunnel.
The tunnel under Monte Tondo will link the Val Sarentino (SS
508) with the Brennero state road (SS 12) and Innsbruck Street. The building of the tunnel will decrease the
amount of traffic in large areas of Val Sarentina and San Genesio. The main
purpose of the project to manage the flow of commuter into the city.
Over the coming months, the Municipality of Bolzano will
monitor the traffic to plan the bypass as best as possible and coordinate it
with other ongoing projects. The Province will undertake geotechnical studies
and route studies in relation to traffic jams.
Some studies have already been carried out on the various
routes of the future tunnel. The alignment
of the tunnel will also depend on the final shape of the other
infrastructure projects in the city of Bolzano.
