Preparatory works for the construction of emergency exits of the Swinoujscie tunnel, driven under the Swina river, are underway. The 1,483.8 m single tube tunnel will have a 3.5 m wide lane for each direction and additionally emergency lanes 2 m wide each.
The tunnel will have a ceiling for ventilation and a slab on which the road will be located. Under the road, in turn, there will be an evacuation road and access to it from the emergency exits.
Freezing the ground will enable the excavation of emergency exits, minimizing the risk of instability and of groundwater flooding. The entire operation will take approximately five months. The brine solution, cooled down to minus 35 degrees Celsius, will circulate in a closed piping system and transfer heat from the ground to the installation and then to the atmosphere. The average temperature of the frozen soil will be minus 10 degrees for sand and clay, minus 8 for chalk.
Last week, the steel structure assembly was completed for where the first emergency exit will be built. Inside the tunnel, drilling and bonding of anchors under the brackets for prefabricated elements are still in progress. Both inside and outside the tunnel - on the Uznam island - the TBM technological pipelines, which were used to transport drilling fluid and spoil, are now being disassembled.
In the TBM launching chamber the sealing of the diaphragm walls is ongoing. The access ramp to the tunnel has also been sealed.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the Swina river, on Wolin Island, the dismantling of TBM Wyspiarka is still in progress. Disassembled elements are being transported to storage areas.
The total cost of the investment is over EUR 191.72 million (PLN900 million), of which nearly EUR 165,24 million (PLN 775.7 million) comes from the European Union (85 %). The rest of the investment comes from the Swinoujscie City Commune budget.
The contractor is the PORR / Gülermak consortium and the project is supervised by SWECO / Lafrentz. Three years have passed since the contract was signed with the contractor and two years since the actual start of construction, there is still a year left to complete the project.
