On the 23.12.2015 the Sparvo tunnel had its opening ceremony. It is part of the 32km La Quercia - Aglio section of the Apennine Road Bypass to Highway A1. In this section motorists will be able to choose between driving along the new highway or the existing one. The main parts which have been opened are the 8.7km Base Tunnel, the 2.5km Sparvo and the 3.8km Val di Sambro tunnels which are all twin tube tunnels. These tunnels will reduce driving time for motorists by at least 15 minutes.
Along with these tunnels on the 05.12.2015 the 7-km section between Aglio and Barberino including Pugliana (1305 m) and Manganaccia (2278 m) tunnels have also been opened. The Apennine Road Bypass, cost EUR4.1 billion but has improved 59 km of roadway between Sasso Marconi (Emilia Romagna) and Barberino di Mugello (Tuscany), thhis includes 41 new tunnels. The Casalecchio - Sasso Marconi section has been enlarged from two to three lanes and had an emergency lane added. The Sasso Marconi interchange has been re-built as well.
