On June 17th 20202 the final breakthrough in the north tube of the Koralm tunnel took place. Since 2014, tunnellers have dug through the mountain from Carinthian Lavanttal with the TBM Kora. After the first breakthrough in 2018 and the world records of the Styrian TBMs Mauli 1 and Mauli 2, both tubes of the Koralm tunnel are now finished: click here for the video. The 33km Koralm tunnel has two tunnel tubes lying 25m to 50m apart and connected by cross passages every 500m. With the help of the Koralm tunnel, passengers can comfortably travel from Vienna to Klagenfurt in just 2:40 or from Graz to Klagenfurt in 45 minutes. The Koralm tunnel is a key element of the 1,800 km Baltic-Adriatic corridor that connects Italy and Slovenia with Poland. The European Union has funded the Koralm Railway with EUR 57 million from the Connecting Europe Facility for 2014-2020.
