Boskalis and joint venture partner Van Oord have started work on the construction of what will be the largest port in Europe for the Fehmarnbelt project in Robyhavn. The working harbour will be used during the construction of the 18-km Fehmarn tunnel between Denmark and Germany: huge quantities of building materials have to be sailed into the harbour along with large machines and heavy equipment which will be used for the building of the tunnel. From the harbour the completed large concrete tunnel elements will be sailed out to their final place on the seabed.
In 2021, work will also begin on building the factory, which will be the focal point of the tunnel construction. The first of the large tunnel components is expected to be lowered into place by 2024. The Fehmarn tunnel is expected to be completed in 2029. This will mean a trip to Germany will then take 10 minutes by car and seven minutes by train.
