On the 26/04/2020 the Danish minister of transport reported that construction of the immersed tunnel Fehmarnbelt will start on January 1, 2021 on the Danish side. Construction work will be ready to continue on the German side by mid-2022.
This is after the European Commission approved the Danish financing on the 20/03/20. The political parties agree to accept Fehmarn A/S's recommendation to initiate the contracts signed in May 2016 with the contractor consortium Femern Link Contractors (FLC).
This implies that the following construction activities will be launched:
• Establishment of the entire tunnel cement works at Rødbyhavn
• Establishment of the tunnel portal on Lolland
• Establishment of residential and administrative facilities
• Ordering and supply of marine tunnel equipment.
The tunnel cement works is expected to be able to start production at the beginning of 2023. Shipping and immersion of the first finished tunnel sections is expected to take place at the beginning of 2024. The Femern Belt link will include an 18 km long rail and road tunnel with an electrified double-track railway and a four-lane motorway between Denmark and Germany.
