The trains will run 2.6 km underground from the Cortijo de Torres trade fair area, near the west ring road, to the central station. Putting underground the existing railtracks will cost €132 million. Construction to end before 2007. 14/03.Open call for bids, deadline 5th November, 2004 for designing the underground cross city section of the high speed train in Malaga (section 22). A 2.4 km section must be put underground from the west ring road to Juan XXIII Avenue. The project will cost EUR115 million, financed by the central government (64%), the Andalusian government and the city of Malaga (18% each). The contract corresponds to the urban penetration of the high speed line in Malaga and the upgrading of the conventional line, for a total length of 3 km. Noticeable structures include two parallel cut-and-cover tunnels, with a length of 1,932 m, one for two IUC tracks and the other for two Spanish gauge tracks. The section spans three kilometres and will cost EUR144.6 million to build, making it the most expensive section of the Cordoba-Malaga high speed line. The cost per kilometre amounts to EUR48 million. The project consists in transferring underground the tracks on a distance of 2.2 km. The section begins in the vicinity of the Cortijo de Torres congress centre and ends at Renfe railway station. The section below ground will start before the west ring road to end after the flyover at Juan XXIII avenue. The scheme requires the construction of twin cut-and-cover tunnels, 1,932 m in length. Time frame for construction is 31 months, although a maximum of 20 months will be necessary to ensure the arrival of high speed services to the city. The project will be finished at the end of 2007. The Ministry of public works will finance 64% of the total cost, while the Andalusian government and the City of Malaga will equally share the remaining 36%.
