On 14th March, 2001 the government of Spain''s Basque region published details of a number of proposed tenders in the European Gazette for design and construction of several sections of highway with numerous NATM tunnels in marls and limestone. The tunnels are mainly twin-tube, two or three lanes wide, and range from 200 m-long to 3.3 km-long. The first section of the alignment is 8.3 km long between Zumarraga and Bergara, while the second section will double the existing 1.4 km bypass east of Bergara until its connection with Zaldumendi interchange on the AP-1.
