Geocontrol SA (Madrid)/PJS Proyectos, Estudios y Servicios Tecnicos de Navarra SA (Pamplona) bagged the EUR875,578.21 contract, excluding VAT, for the building of new tunnels tubes for the  Belate (2.968 m) and Almandoz (1.220 m) tunnels on the N-121-A (Pampelune-Behobia). Today's requirements for modern road tunnels in compliance with current safety regulations are different from those in force when the Belate and Almandoz tunnels were designed, which were inaugurated in 1997. Moreover, the N-121-A road currently supports an average vehicle intensity of 10,000 vehicles per day, with a percentage of heavy vehicles of the order of 28%. It is also important to bear in mind the importance of this road as a link to France on the routes which connect the various regions of the peninsula with Navarre.

For these reasons it is considered essential to build a new tube for each of the two tunnels mentioned, as close as possible to the existing one.
