The second tunnel is nearly 2 km long and includes two 25 m-long false tunnels at the entrances. The pilot tunnel will be TBM-built, at an estimated cost of EUR10 million. Work to commence in summer 2007. The TBM will be used in the Bolzano-Sarentino direction to drive a first section, then will cross the Goldegg cave prior to boring a second section until the uphill junction with SS 508. The project consists of two 3.5 m-wide bores, 1,990 metres and 1,500 metres. In a second stage, they will be widened to make two single-tube bidirectional tunnels to accommodate two 3.5-wide lanes, two 50 cm-wide shoulders and two 1 m-wide pavements.
