E-mail rg@vegagerdin.is, svs@vegagerdin.is or pth@vegagerdin.is 51/03.Heraldsverk and Leonard Nilsen & Sonner secured a ISK625.9 million contract to build a 1,150 m-long 8 m-wide dual-lane bidirectional tunnel under Almannaskard Pass in southeast Iceland, 162 m-long concrete portals (90 m and 72 m) and a 4.1 km road section. The tunnel will cross basalt layers, mostly tholeiite lava approximately 8 million years old. Drill/blast method in approximately 5 m-long sections. Support mostly with rock bolts and shotcrete with steel fibres and wiremesh, if necessary. Preparation works started in April 2004. Tunnelling will start in early June 2004.
