E-mail rg@vegagerdin.is, svs@vegagerdin.is or pth@vegagerdin.is 51/03.Heraldsverk and Leonard Nilsen & Sonner secured a ISK625.9 million contract to build a 1,150 m-long 8 m-wide dual-lane bidirectional tunnel under Almannaskard Pass in southeast Iceland, 162 m-long concrete portals (90 m and 72 m) and a 4.1 km road section. The tunnel will cross basalt layers, mostly tholeiite lava approximately 8 million years old. Drill/blast method in approximately 5 m-long sections. Support mostly with rock bolts and shotcrete with steel fibres and wiremesh, if necessary. Preparation works started in April 2004. Tunnelling will start in early June 2004. Breakthrough is expected in December 2004. The project will be finished in mid-June 2005. Financing by Vegagerdin. Visit www.vegagerdin.is 23/04.
