Invitations to tender for engineering design expected 2001 for Kakola underground STW with 1.7 km of drill/blast tunnels and 250,000 cu m cavern in granite. Construction start 2002. Visit www.turku.fi 04/01.Restricted call for bids, deadline 20th October, 2003 for construction of the Kakola sewage plant including rock caverns and tunnels under the jail in the city area. Length is approximately 3.3 km, cross sections ranging from 30 to 180 square metres. Geology consisting of hard crystalline rock, mainly granite and mica gneiss. Drill/blast method of excavation with rock bolts, shotcrete and concreting as support and lining. Muck handling using dumper trucks and conveyors. Excavation in 2004-2005. Estimated cost for tunnelling: €15 million. Plancenter is consultant for process and engineering design. Rockplan is consultant for rock engineering design. E-mail timo.anttila@turku.fi 39/03.Skanska Tekra has secured a EUR16.4 million excavation contract for the Kakolanmäki wastewater treatment plant in Turku. The client is Turun Seudun Puhdistamo. The plant is planned below the Kakola prison. The lowest excavation depth is -10 m, where the plant aeration basins are situated. Underground caverns are planned to create pre-clearing, aeration and after-clearing basins, four of each type. There is also a service tunnel around the whole basin complex, including a treatment basin for passing waters and rinsing basins. The pre-clearing rock chamber size is 42.5 m-long x 18 m-wide x 10.2 m-high. The aeration rock chamber has a 50 m length x 20 m width x 21.6 m height. The after-clearing rock chamber has a length of 112 m x width of 20 m x height of 10.4-11.9 m. The service tunnel is 18 m-wide x 183 m-long on its north side, 10.5 m-wide x 183 m-long on its south side, 254 m-long x 7 m-wide at the east side and 254 m-long x 20 m-wide at the west side. The main tunnels between the different basins are 183 m-long x 10.5 m-wide. Rock pillars between the basins are 18 m and 16 m thick. There are also plans to build a new sewage tunnel to the old wastewater treatment plant.Other underground works include one main access tunnel and four shafts to the underground cavern. The access tunnel is planned to be built from the administration building. A ventilation structure is also planned next to the administration building and shafts in every corner of the underground cavern. The main rock types are granite and migmatite. There are usually gouge filled discontinuities / joints. The open joints are located at the surface and in weakness zones. The joint fillings are carbonate, kaolin, chlorite and pyrites. The planned excavation method is drill/blast. When the main access tunnel is under excavation it is planned to use only one jumbo but when the excavation will have progressed to the rock chambers it is planned to use at least two jumbos or more if necessary. Systematic bolting and shotcreting will be used for support. In weakness zones or where the rock is of bad quality, more bolts and fibre-reinforced shotcrete will be implemented. The excavated material (900,000 bulk sq m) will be transported outside by trucks. Excavation will continue until early January 2006. When completed, the plant will treat sewage for at least 280,000 people. Visit www.skanska.com 36/04.Skanska Tekra will use a three-boom Rocket Boomer XL 3C and a two-boom Boomer L2 C from Atlas Copco for building the Kakolanmaki sewage treatment plant in Turku. The project involves the excavation of 460,000 cu m as well as related grouting and reinforcement works. Click fi/15. Visit www.boomer-rig.com 40/04.
