BOT procurement planned for $3.6 billion first stage funded 90% by central government. Orange Line 14.4 km with 14 stations planned in east-west direction from Sun Yat-sen University through the city and on to Taliao. Red Line 28.3 km with 23 stations planned north-south from Chiatou to Linhai with central one-third in bored tunnels. Construction to start 2001 with commissioning in stages from 2004 to 2007. Technical consultant to the Kaohsiung Department of Rapid Transit Systems is Mott MacDonald. April 1999.   BOT construction of four-line metro to get underway in 2001 with two routes totalling 42.7 km opening between 2004 and 2007. 14.4 km Orange line will run east-west from National Sun Yat-Sen University through city centre to Ta Liao with 14 stations and will include main depot and operations control centre. 28.3 km Red line will run north-south connecting Chiao Tou with Lin Hai industrial park with 23 stations and two depots. Government will fund up to 90% of capital cost. August 1999.  Gamuda Bhd (Malaysia) and New Asia Construction & Development Corp. have jointly secured a four-year civil works contract from the Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation for the construction of the Orange Line. The T$7.36 billion contract includes the design and construction of a 4.8 km tunnel, a 4-level underground station and a 2-level underground station. 41/02.Maeda has won a Â¥15 billion (US$122.3 million) order to build a 1.7 km metro section with three stations. Taiwan High Speed Rail Consortium commissioned to design, build and operate 340 km line with 35 tunnels from 200 m to 7.2 km long totalling some 50 km. Nine intermediate stations planned at Sungshan, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhwa, Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan. Bid value $11.77 bn for start 1998 and completion mid-2003. Possibly the largest BOT contract in the world. Work will be split into 8 to 14 contracts for which pre-qualification is necessary. Design consultant PB International. April 1998.   Mott MacDonald appointed to monitor and audit design, cnstruction and commissioning of $16 billion, 350 km/h railway system, leading the International Railway Engineering Group in jv with Electrowatt Engineering, DE-Consult and Systra. Hydro


Salini Impregilo signed a EUR 3.5 bn ($3.9 bn) framework agreement to build the hydroelectric project, located on the Vakhsh river, in Tajikistan, upstream of Nurek HPP which is currently in operation. Salini Impregilo has also been assigned the EUR1.75 bn ($1.95 bn) Lot 1 of the works. It consists of the building of a 335-m-high rockfill dam with a clay core, which will be the tallest in the world. The dam will be located on the Vakhsh River in Pamir, one of Central Asia's main mountain ranges. The project includes hydraulic tunnels for diversion and spillage (with lengths between 1100 m and 1500 m, diameter between 10 m and 15 m), an underground powerhouse with six units (6 x 600 MW), plant and auxiliary equipment. The agreement between Salini Impregilo and OJSC Rogun Hydropower Project (the state-run company that is coordinating the project) concerns the exploitation of the Pamir’s huge hydroelectric potential and includes four lots. Drainage

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has awarded a 2.1 billion baht contract to IN consortium, comprising Italian-Thai Development Plc and Nishimatsu Construction, to drill a 5.3 km drainage tunnel between Lat Phrao canal and Phra Khanong. Work would start early next year at Lat Phrao canal, near the Rama IX pond. The tunnel would go to Saen Saeb canal, Sukhumvit 71 road and the Phra Khanong canal before ending at the Phra Khanong water pumping station. The work is due for completion in 2006. Trunk Sewer

  Planned system 128 km long of which 35 km presently under construction using up to five Soltau 3.5 m-diameter EPB machines fitted with screw augers. Progress limited by availability of jacking shafts, but 16-23 m/day reported for first 4 km of completed 3.0 m internal diameter pipe. More information from paulsoltau@aol.com . October 1999.  Alignment of tunnel parallels the coast at 20 m depth along Sukhumvit Road. Some 65 jacking and reception shafts being installed and a further 40 required for sewer connections. Time for standard 600 m drive between shafts in marine clay horizon is 14 days and time to sink and prepare a shaft for launch is six weeks. Twelve drives completed, with three out of the five Soltau machines in the ground at any one time. Contractor VSK Pipejacking jv will commence another 10 km of small diameter connectors early-2000. Metro Blue Line

Bangkok Transit System received first $87 million to commence construction of 23.7 km Green Line. North and south sections of Blue Line scheduled for completion 2003. Nov 1998.   $650 million 10 km-long twin-tube 5.7 m-diameter south section with nine stations under construction by jv of Bilfinger & Berger, Ch Karnchang, Kumagai Gumi and Tokyu Construction and will use two Herrenknecht EPBs ex-Taipei and two new Kawasaki machines. The Herrenknechts will start in July 1999 from Queen Sirikit station and will bore 4.8 km to Hua Lamphong station by mid-2001. The Kawasaki machines will start from the Rama IX station and drive 3.4 km to Queen Sirikit. Precast segmental concrete lining comprising 1.2 m-wide rings of five segments and key with hydrophilic gaskets. Rates of 15 m/machine/24h day are expected in the homogeneous, low-abrasive, boulderless clay. Principal design engineer Maunsell Asia. $770 million 10 km-long north section of similar dimensions with another nine stations under construction by ION jv comprising Italian-Thai, Obayashi and Nishimatsu using four dual-mode open/EPB machines from Kawasaki. Two machines launched from Ratchada station box early-1999 and two from Thiam Ruam Mit station box in April, 1999. Diaphragm walling and core excavation of station boxes is well underway along the route and will be completed ahead of each TBM arrival. Main consultant Ove Arup, sub-consultant for tunnels Geoconsult. Handover scheduled for 2002. June 1999.   First TBMs commissioned for 11 km Bangsue-Lat Phrao-Depot northern section of planned 20.5 km MRTA Blue Line by ION joint venture under $1 billion contract. 9 km of 6 m-diameter twin-bore tunnels and 9 stations designed by Arup Transport. ION comprises Italian Thai, Obayashi and Nishimatsu. Planned southern section of line will extend via Bon Kai to Hua Lum Pong station. August 1999.   Bilfinger & Berger reports completion of 190,000 sq m of diaphragm walls up to 1.2 m-thick for the stations using special equipment in restricted working heights. Foundation levels of stations up to 46 m below ground, with centre columns resting on 1.8 m-diameter piles, 70 m-deep. Dewatering avoided because of fears of settlement. Jet grouting employed to strengthen ground around TBM launch and reception positions and at pump sumps and adits between main tunnels and intervention shafts. October 1999.   SNC-Lavalin awarded three-year, $150 million lump-sum contract in joint venture with Ch Karnchang of Bangkok for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of trackwork and power systems for the whole 20 km-long metro system. By April, 2000 nine of the sixteen drives were completed with a peak advance of 35 m/day, erecting 1.2 m-wide, 30 cm-thick, 5 + 1 concrete segment rings. A single tunnel will be located in east Bangkok while a twin tunnel will be built in the west side in Thonburi. The line will cross underground the Chao Phraya river at Pak Khlong Talart.
