These two notices to prequalify for the two main consultancy assignments mark the commencement of preparatory actions handled by Orestad Development. Six teams of consultants are expected to be prequalified for each assignment before Christmas. They will then be asked to submit tenders by February 2007 and consultancy contracts are expected to be completed by July for immediate commencement of the work. At the same time the legal acts behind the Circle Line project are being processed by the Danish Parliament. The present planning basis for the project is the preliminary studies completed and reported by May 2005, which are made public by the Ministry of Transport and Energy. The reports can be downloaded (in Danish) from www.m.dk under "Om metro", "Cityring", "Hent materiale".Both consultants will be the owner's consultant through the design and procurement phases including design follow-up during construction. The MCW consultant will act on civil works, building works and related road works, i.e. all tunnel and stations. The MTS consultant will act on all railway system facilities, the rolling stock and the control and maintenance centre (CMC).The Circle Line is 15.5 km long, all underground double tunnel plus 1 km connection tunnel to the CMC, also double tube. The diameter is expected to be 4.9 m identical to the present Copenhagen metro tunnel diameter. There will be 17 stations, all underground. Tunnelling will be, to the possible extent, within the Copenhagen limestone, but it will have to pass areas of different geology at some sections. TBMs are anticipated for tunnelling. Precast concrete segments were applied for the present metro tunnel within the same type of geology. Contractors are expected to be invited to prequalify in late 2008. The planned construction start is scheduled by 2010, for service by 2018. Approved budget is DKK15 billion with a 50% probability. Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has handed over the feasibility study for an underground tunnel in Mumbai to Arup, following withdrawal by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) while they had begun the study of geological conditions. DMRC had initially volunteered to do the feasibility study for a tunnel, linking the Haji Ali area of central Mumbai to Nariman Point in south Mumbai. Arup will submit the report in two to three months. Other options being weighed, apart from the tunnel, are an undersea tunnel or the stiffly-opposed 4.35 km Pedder Road flyover that would help ease vehicular congestion due to the opening of the Bandra-Worli sealink bridge later this year. Dublin Corporation and the National Roads Authority in Ireland have announced the award the $450 million design/construct contract for the Port Tunnel to Nishimatsu Mowlem Irishenco. The port road will be a 5.6 km-long dual carriageway, most of which will be in a 4.5 km-long twin-tube tunnel. Construction will commence in early 2001, using two TBMs to accelerate the overall process. The tunnel should open in mid-2004 to provide a high quality access route for the 2 million trucks that currently travel through the city each year to the port. High Speed Railway


Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) awarded to the consortium of Pizzarotti and Saipem the EUR 1.15 bn, excluding VAT, contract to build the 7km the High Speed Railway Bypass and the Belfiore High Speed Station in Florence, Italy. The two parallel tunnels will be constructed at an average depth of 20m using a TBM. The station has been designed by the architect Foster and engineering firm Ove Arup and partners. 

In recent months, the revamping of the TBM at the Campo Marte site has continued. The preparatory activities for the disassembly of the machine were started in August and will continue until March 2023. They will also continue with overhauling, replacing components and reassembling. By the end of March 2023, once all operations and preliminary tests have been completed, the TBM can be put into operation.

Watercare and the Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture signed the contract to construct Watercare's Central Interceptor, a 13-km wastewater tunnel between Western Springs and the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant at Auckland with associated infrastructure. The tunnel is expected to reduce wastewater overflows in the central city by 80 per cent. Arup has been commissioned by Ghella Abergeldie JV to provide tender design support, detailed design services and construction phase support of shafts structural design and the tunnel lining design. Bangkok Transit System received first $87 million to commence construction of 23.7 km Green Line. North and south sections of Blue Line scheduled for completion 2003. Nov 1998.   $650 million 10 km-long twin-tube 5.7 m-diameter south section with nine stations under construction by jv of Bilfinger & Berger, Ch Karnchang, Kumagai Gumi and Tokyu Construction and will use two Herrenknecht EPBs ex-Taipei and two new Kawasaki machines. The Herrenknechts will start in July 1999 from Queen Sirikit station and will bore 4.8 km to Hua Lamphong station by mid-2001. The Kawasaki machines will start from the Rama IX station and drive 3.4 km to Queen Sirikit. Precast segmental concrete lining comprising 1.2 m-wide rings of five segments and key with hydrophilic gaskets. Rates of 15 m/machine/24h day are expected in the homogeneous, low-abrasive, boulderless clay. Principal design engineer Maunsell Asia. $770 million 10 km-long north section of similar dimensions with another nine stations under construction by ION jv comprising Italian-Thai, Obayashi and Nishimatsu using four dual-mode open/EPB machines from Kawasaki. Two machines launched from Ratchada station box early-1999 and two from Thiam Ruam Mit station box in April, 1999. Diaphragm walling and core excavation of station boxes is well underway along the route and will be completed ahead of each TBM arrival. Main consultant Ove Arup, sub-consultant for tunnels Geoconsult. Handover scheduled for 2002. June 1999.   First TBMs commissioned for 11 km Bangsue-Lat Phrao-Depot northern section of planned 20.5 km MRTA Blue Line by ION joint venture under $1 billion contract. 9 km of 6 m-diameter twin-bore tunnels and 9 stations designed by Arup Transport. ION comprises Italian Thai, Obayashi and Nishimatsu. Planned southern section of line will extend via Bon Kai to Hua Lum Pong station. August 1999.   Bilfinger & Berger reports completion of 190,000 sq m of diaphragm walls up to 1.2 m-thick for the stations using special equipment in restricted working heights. Foundation levels of stations up to 46 m below ground, with centre columns resting on 1.8 m-diameter piles, 70 m-deep. Dewatering avoided because of fears of settlement. Jet grouting employed to strengthen ground around TBM launch and reception positions and at pump sumps and adits between main tunnels and intervention shafts.
