Robbins Signs Contract for Very Long Water Tunnel in IndiaJaiprakash Associates Limited (JAL) has signed contracts with Robbins for the AMR project in Andhra Pradesh, India on 26th May, 2006. The contracts include two Robbins 10 m-diameter hard rock double shield TBMs and related equipment, as well as all conveyors, spares, cutters and key personnel to bore a 43.5 km-long tunnel through hard rock. The tunnel will be the longest single tunnel without intermediate access in the world. It will bring water from a large existing dam irrigating thousands of acres in Andhra Pradesh. This arid region will strongly benefit from the project through better job opportunities and a substantial increase in the standard of living.The order consists of three main contracts: the supply of two TBMs, a conveyor system, components, spare and cutters by Robbins USA; the supply of local Indian components such as backup structure and other components by Robbins India; and the supply of personnel, supplies and services by Robbins India. Visit www.robbinstbm.comJAL signed an agreement in August last year with the Irrigation and CAD department of Andhra Pradesh for the Srisailam left bank canal tunnel scheme of the Alimmineti Madhava Reddy (AMR) project for design and execution of tunnel 1 and tunnel 2 including head regulator at the entrance portal of tunnel 1 from Srisailam reservoir in Mahaboobnagar and Nalgonda districts. The value of the contract is Rs19.2 billion. The project is to be completed in 60 months. The Srisailam left bank canal tunnel scheme of AMR project envisages carrying water from Srisailam reservoir to the plains of Nalgonda district through tunnel 1 (T-1) of 9.2 m finished circular diameter and length 43.5 km off-taking from Srisailam reservoir. This tunnel opens into an approach canal which crosses Dindi river across where a balancing reservoir is proposed. Thereafter the waters are to be carried through an open channel and the 9 m finished circular diameter 7.25 km-long tunnel 2 (T-2) before it reaches the plains of drought prone district of Nalgonda.
