Works for Erjos Tunnel in Tenerife begin

The works to complete Tenerife’s motorway ring road started on the 25th November 2019. The project, which has an investment of EUR 240.4 million and has to be completed within 48 months, is a fundamental infrastructure, to alleviate traffic congestion on the TF-5 motorway in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The new 11.27 km section will link north and south, joining the end of the TF1 at Santiago del Teide 22,609 km with the end of the TF5 in the town of San Juan del Reparo, in the municipality of El Tanque 11,270km. The project will include the 5.1 km twin-tube Erjos tunnel, running under the Teno Massif. The tunnel will be the longest in the Canaries and one of the longest road tunnels in Spain.

The first stage, now underway, is the preparation of the ground to create access for the heavy machinery which will be needed to excavate the tunnel.

This  infrastructure will improve road safety of the users and the connectivity of the residents of the towns of El Tanque, Los Silos and Santiago del Teide. The new road will enable a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and provide protection to the environmental environment of the area.

Soon the preliminary works will begin at the north adit of the future tunnel, in the El Tanque municipality, where ramps will be created to facilitate the access of heavy machinery at the drilling site .The excavation of the tunnel is due to begin in January 2020.
