The Avigliana Bypass Opens for the Winter Olympic Games in Turin
26/02/2006
The Avigliana Bypass Opens for the Winter Olympic Games in TurinOne of the worst traffic black spots in Turin province travelling towards Susa valley was the Avigliana crossing. SITAF inaugurated on 6th February, 2006 a bypass on road SS 589 to Avigliana lakes built as part of the investment programme for the XXth Winter Olympics Games in Turin. The new road link now connects national road 589 Avigliana-Pinerolo, from the midpoint between the great and small lakes, and links up the Avigliana interchange of highway A32 Turin-Bardonecchia-Frejus tunnel. The road connects directly Turin with the high-mountain Olympic sites. The 4 km alignment was divided in two separate contracts. Contract 1, managed by Agenzia Torino 2006, required the construction of a 1.9 km tunnel under Mount Cuneo. Contract 2, financed by SITAF, the operator of highway A32 Turin-Bardonecchia and the Frejus tunnel, included a 105 m cut-and-cover tunnel beneath the Turin-Modane rail line and a 572 m bored tunnel in Via Antica di Francia.
