TERRATEC 3.85m diameter Rock Slurry TBM has its first breakthrough in Malad West for Mumbai city’s 5.8 km Sewage Disposal Project-Stage II, PST-1 in India.
TERRATEC celebrates the first breakthrough of its 3.85m diameter Rock Slurry TBM in the Mumbai Sewer Disposal Project (MSDP), Stage II, PST-1. Deployed by J. Kumar-MEPL JV, the project is a significant stride in enhancing Mumbai’s sewage infrastructure, overseen by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
This breakthrough marks a crucial step in enhancing Mumbai’s sewage infrastructure, a project overseen by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The project involves constructing two priority sewer tunnels (PST-1 & PST-2) to improve wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal processes, ultimately reducing environmental impact.
TERRATEC has supplied two TBMs for the project: a 3.85m diameter Rock Slurry TBM for the 5.8-km PST-1 and a 3.14m diameter Rock EBP TBM for the 4.7-km PST-2. The Rock Slurry TBM, the smallest of its kind in India, has demonstrated impressive excavation rates, achieving up to 18 rings per day in fresh rock.
The project aims to connect Don Bosco Junction in Borivali West to the Malad Waste Water Treatment Facility (WWTF) and the Oshiwara Bus Depot to the Malad Pumping Station, respectively. This will reduce wastewater flow into existing collector sewers and decommission outdated pumping stations, ultimately improving the quality and reliability of wastewater management.

TERRATEC Rock Slurry TBM employs a 5+1 universal type segment design, featuring reinforced concrete segments that are 200mm thick and 1200mm wide. To efficiently manage slurry removal and treatment, the TERRATEC Slurry Transportation System and Slurry Treatment Plant are utilized.
On the other drive, on July 20, TERRATEC S116, a 3.14m Rock EPB TBM was lowered into Malad Pumping Station’s launch shaft (Shaft 08). Along with another TERRATEC TBM S80, it’s the smallest diameter earth pressure balance (EPB) machine to be deployed in India.
The MSDP – Stage II Priority Works project includes a sewer tunnel along Link Road, connecting Don Bosco Junction to the existing Malad Pumping Station. Another branch sewer tunnel connects from the Gorai Pumping Station, and a tunnel runs from the existing Malad Pumping Station to the proposed Malad IPS at Malad WwTF. This project involves constructing shafts and upstream connections to reduce wastewater flow into existing collector sewers and decommission pumping stations.
The comprehensive project involves constructing new pumping stations, expanding sewage collection networks, establishing wastewater treatment facilities, and implementing treated effluent disposal systems. These treatment plants are projected to recycle an impressive 2,464 million litres of sewage per day, significantly reducing water pollution and rejuvenating Mumbai’s Mithi and Oshiwara rivers.
TERRATEC has been chosen for the Mumbai Sewer Disposal Project Metro Rail Project due to TERRATEC’s successful track record on projects such as Phase III & IV of the Delhi Metro, Lucknow Metro, Pune Metro, Kanpur Metro, Ahmadabad Metro, Surat Metro and Mumbai Metro. This is a result of tailor-made robust TBM design, prompt onsite assistance, availability of TBM spares, and highly skilled specialised support throughout tunnelling operations.
