TBM Olivia breaks through at Havneholmen for the M4 extension, Copenhagen

On the 23/04/2021 - after more than a year - TBM Olivia completed the tunnel excavation of the M4 line extension to Sydhavn in Copenhagen. The machine broke into the chamber at Havneholmen, which connects M4 Sydhavn with M4 Nordhavn and M3 Cityringen.

Since January 2020, the TBMs Inge and Olivia- , with a length of more than 140 m and a weight of almost 800 t - have driven from Enghave Brygge to Ny Ellebjerg, where they broke through at the turn of the year. Then they were hoisted up and transported back to Enghave Brygge, where they drilled the last tunnel section to the upcoming metro station Havneholmen by Fisketorvet.

The TBMs are named after two strong Danish women: Inge Lehmann who was a geophysicist and discovered the earth's core more than 100 years ago. Olivia Nielsen who was a prominent figure in the trade union movement in the 19th century and has, among other things, had a road named after her in Sydhavn.

The two TBMs will be dismantled, and both sent back to their country of origin, China, where they will be recycled.

The metro line M4 extension to Sydhavn was approved by the Danish Parliament in February 2015. The extension of the existing metro line M4 - running from Orientkaj in Nordhavn over City - is 4.5 km long with 5 new underground stations situated at Fisketorvet, at Enghave Brygge, at Sluseholmen on Mozarts Plads and at Ny Ellebjerg. It will get approx. 9 million passengers a year.

When the M4 Sydhavn opens in 2024, the southern part of Copenhagen will be connected to the metro network, and the trip from Ny Ellebjerg to Rådhuspladsen will only take 10 minutes. Copenhagen will have four full metro lines in operation and an even stronger public transport network reducing congestion and increasing mobility in the metropolitan area.  The large hub at Ny Ellebjerg will give an easy and fast access to both regional trains, S-trains, buses and metro.

Ahead awaits the final phase with rail laying, preparation of stations and test driving, before the M4 Sydhavn in 2024 can open its doors to the first passengers.
