The Federal Office of Transport (FOT) has issued the building permit for the new tram-train line that will connect Lugano to Ponte Tresa and Manno. This project is the first stage for a modern network aimed to improve the public transport offered between Lugano and the surrounding areas.  

The new Lugano tram-train will run from the center of Lugano to Bioggio, after which the line will split into two branches: one going north-east up to Manno and the other going south-west to the existing section towards Ponte Tresa: click here to see the route.  

The project approved by the FOT includes various elements, such as the underground station in correspondence with the Lugano FFS station, a 2.2 km tunnel, an additional stop in the Agno Municipality, a new maintenance center for the railway company FLP and interchange car parks.
