Stockholm is one of the fastest growing metropolitan regions
in Europe. The population is increasing by 35,000 a year. Stockholm needs more
housing and better public transportation and as a result the Metro is about to
be extended they will be adding 20 km of new track and 11 new stations.
In January 2014, the government, Stockholm County Council
(since 01.01.2019 Region Stockholm) and the City of Stockholm, Municipality of
Nacka, Jarfalla Municipality and City of Solna signed a mutual agreement on the
expansion of the Metro and increased housing construction. The extension of the
Metro is the largest investment in public transport in the Stockholm region
since the 1970's. The EUR1.58 billion (SEK16.7 billion) investment will be financed jointly by all the parties
concerned, i.e. the State, the County Council and the municipalities that will
be served by the Metro.
The Blue line will be extended:
• 4.1 km to
Barkarby, with 2 new stations Barkarbystaden and Barkarby, estimated production cost EUR236,34 million
(SEK 2.5 billion);
• 4.5
km to Sodermalm with 2
new stations at Sofia and Hammarby kanal, estimated production cost: EUR236,34
million (SEK 2.5 billion);
• 4.1km to
Nacka with 3 new stations at Sickla,
Järla and Nacka, estimated production
cost EUR236,34 million (SEK 2.5
billion);
• 2.7 km to
Soderort, with 1 new station at Slakthusomradet and 1 new subsurface
platform -70 m beneath the ground
surface - at Gullmarsplan, estimated production cost EUR236,34 million (SEK 2.5
billion).
The present depot at Hogdalen will be expanded with a new
workshop, new sidings and a 2.5 km-long railway tunnel that will connect up
with the Farsta branch of the Green line. Estimated production cost EUR94.51
million ( SEK 1 billion).
The Yellow line will be extended 4.1km from Odenplan to
Arenastaden with 3 new stations at Arenastaden, Sodra Hagalund and Hagastaden, the
estimated production cost is EUR349.80 million (SEK 3.7 billion). The new
Yellow line will connect with the Green line at Odenplan. The single- and
double-track tunnel will be driven using
traditional techniques. Running in parallel with the rail tunnels is a service
tunnel, which will also be used for evacuation purposes.
The new stations will have 145 m-long platforms for
adaptation to today’s modern Metro trains. The platform width varies from 10 m
to 14 m for stations with high passenger flows. The height from the rock bed to
the highest point in the platform space is approximately 9 m. The construction
will take 6 to 8 years to complete. Approximately 40 contracts will be put out
to tender. The last contract will be procured in about 2023 but procurement of
the works has already begun, please click here for procurement timetable.
