25/06/2005
Second Guadarrama Tunnel Breaks ThroughThe Ministry of public works concluded on 1st June, 2005 after almost three years of work the excavation across the Guadarrama mountain range of the second of a pair of tunnels on the Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid high speed line. The completed tunnel is 28,407.70 m in length and is part of contract 2 built by OHL, Sacyr, Comsa and Hochtief. The breakthrough of the west bore by a Herrenknecht TBM marks the end of tunnelling of the main tunnels, following the breakthrough on 5th May of the east bore. Tunnelling on contract 2 began on 6th January, 2003. The total excavated length for both tunnels is 56,826.36 m. The Guadarrama tunnels are the fifth longest rail tunnels in the world. The excavation diameter is 9.45 m and the inner diameter is 8.5 m. The Guadarrama tunnels are basically two parallel tubes, each 30 m distant. Both will be cross connected by emergency galleries built each 250 m. Click
