On 16/09/2020 the Saudi Arabia’s Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) completed the longest water pipeline tunnel project in the world. Its length is 12.445 km driven with a TBM, diameter 8.4 m, length 160 m, which reached a record speed of 60.3 meters per day. ‏  

The tunnel, driven in 19 months and completed before its contractual time,  will pump desalinated water from the Al-Shuaiba desalination plant on the Red Sea coast to reservoirs in Taif to meet the demand for water in the governorate and in its villages in the southern Al-Baha region. The tunnel has shortened the distance of water reaching Taif by more than 40km and it will supply desalinated water to Taif and Al Baha in the third quarter of 2021.
