On 27/01/2022 the Romanian Minister of Transport, Sorin Grindeanu, signed a collaboration protocol for the construction of the subway in Cluj county, Cluj-Napoca and Floresti municipalities.  The light metro line will have a length of 21.03 km, with 19 underground stations and an above-ground depot. Preliminary estimates say it will carry up to 164,000 passengers a day by 2030. The basic works for the first 9 stations must be completed by 2026.  

Total estimated value of the project is EUR 2.04 bn (RON10.11 bn), including VAT. The financing of the project is made from non-reimbursable external funds (including PNRR), from the state budget through the budget of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, as well as from the budget local of ATU Cluj-Napoca Municipality and of ATU Floresti Commune. Cluj-Napoca and Floresti town halls will handle the tender for the design and execution of this project, but also the implementation of the contract.
