Robbins Receives Order for Two TBMs for Canadian JobThe Robbins Company received an order for two hard rock TBMs from the Bilfinger Berger / Frucon JV, which will be used to drill the Capilano-Seymour water tunnel in Vancouver. The project includes two 7.2 km parallel tunnels in deep rock, approximately 3.7 m in diameter, lying at 160 to 640 m below the surface, the 185 m-deep 12 m-diameter Seymour shaft and the two 270 m-deep 4 m-diameter Capilano shafts.The Robbins machines, 120 m in length for a weight of 280 tons each, will be equipped with a 3.8 m-diameter cutterhead fitted with 26 cutters. The TBMs feature the following technical data: a total installed main drive power of 1,260 kW (4 x 315 kW), a total installed power of 2,950 kVA and a thrust force of 10,700 kN. They will be capable of working in an expected compressive strength of 265 MPa.Delivery is expected in August 2005. The tunnels will be supported with bolts, ring beams, shotcrete and wire mesh.
