On 10.04.2016 the TBM Tatuzao (11,5 m diameter,120 m length, 27000 tonne weight) completed the Metro Line 4 tunnels between Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca, linking the Rio de Janeiro centre with the main Olympic games hub at Barra de Tijuca. The TBM breakthrough underneath the Alto Leblon in the cavern of the future Gavea station, connecting the South and West areas of the city. The TBM has driven 3620 m at a depth of 12 m and installed 1790 concrete rings (Click here for a video).
The 16 km Metro Line 4, equipped with 7 stations (Jardim Oceanico, Sao Conrado, Gavea, Antero de Quental, Jardim de Alah, Nossa Senhora da Paz, General Osorio), reached 92.5% of completion. It will open in July, in time for the 2016 Olympic Games next August. The 5 new stations Nossa Senhora da Paz, Jardim de Alah, Antero de Quental, Sao Conrado and Jardim Oceanico will be in operation before the Olympic Games and they are in their final stage with passenger access, granite floors, decorative inserts and installed artistic panels. Escalators and elevators are also being tested at some stations.
