Refurbishment plans for Swiss road tunnelsIn 2008 a survey by ASTRA, the Federal Roads Office, revealed that 126 of the 220 national road tunnels in Switzerland are not fully compliant with the latest requirements. Some 58 tunnels need better ventilation, 63 tunnels require an escape route, 59 tunnels need signs, and 27 tunnels need energy supply. Switzerland currently has 84 single bore tunnels totalling 95.3 km, and 136 twin-tube tunnels with a total of 124.1 km.ASTRA has developed a EUR843.86 million refurbishment programme for 2012-2016 to cover: signs for delimitation, demarcation and illumination of escape routes and emergency exits; ducts for ventilation and evacuation of stale air that allow controlled compression and extraction of smoke; and escape routes in high and low density traffic tunnels.
