Prague metro line D - construction begins

Construction of the Prague metro Line D has begun not far from the existing Pankrác C station, in the PAD2 locality - the consortium SubterraAS, Hochtief CZ, Strabag AS, Hochtief Infrastructure and Ed. Züblin began the construction of the first section I.D1a Pankrác – Olbrachtova of the metro line D in Prague.

As part of the first stage of construction, the contractors will build two stations - Pankrác D and Olbrachtova, interstation track tunnels, a tunnel for turning tracks, a parking tunnel, technological tunnels for air conditioning, a connector between tracks C and D, and several escalator tunnels for exits. The section will be 1.3 km long but it will be necessary to excavate a total of almost 3 km of tunnels.

The 7.5 years construction of the first section will take place in six locations designated as PAD1b, PAD2, PAD4, VO-OL, OL1 and OL2 (PAD = Pankrác D, VO-OL = Olbrachtova ventilation facility, OL = Olbrachtova). At four of these locations (PAD1b, PAD4, VO-OL and OL1), DPP has been conducting a geological survey since June 2019. Once complete the contractors will follow up with the actual construction of the first section of route D. The main locations from which tunnels and stations will be excavated will be PAD1b, VO-OL and OL1. Excavation in this section of route D will be carried out by the contractors using the new Austrian tunneling method (NATM).

Excavations begin in the PAD1b location

Excavation of the access tunnel (length 218 m, width 9.6 m and height 8.4 m) to the future Pankrac D station in Prague, started at the end of June 2022 in the PAD1b location. The company Subterra carried out the geological survey. Excavation, started from the bottom of the shaft at a depth of 26.45 m, completing  1m/day  using the new NATM method. The access tunnel should be excavated by the end of this year.

The access tunnel will pass under the highway and will end behind the intersection between 5. Května, Sdružení and Hvězdova streets. From this point, the DPP will start digging the Pankrác D station and the tunnels for the turning tracks. They will start with the technological tunnel, where the substations and other technological equipment for the future Pankrác D station will be located. Excavations will take place towards the intersection of Na Pankráci, Na Strži and Budějovická streets.

An access tunnel will be constructed for the removal of rubble during the excavation of the Pankrác D station and for the transport of construction material and all equipment. After the construction is completed, it will serve as part of the ventilation system.

Section Olbrachtova - Nové Dvory

The Prague Transport company (DPP) recently issued a public contract for construction of the second 3.3 km section Olbrachtova - Nové Dvory (I.D1b) of Prague’s metro line D. The section will include 3 stations (Nádraží Krč, Hospital/Nemocnice Krč and Nové Dvory);  two inter-station single-track access tunnels; technological tunnels for e.g. air conditioning and other equipment necessary for the operation of the Prague metro; the establishment of a possible metro branch to Modřany and a power supply system for the entire shortest operable section Pankrác D - Nové Dvory. The Nádraží Krč station will be one of the few surface stations of the D metro line.

Part of the second section will be built by TBM. Excavations will take place from the  future Písnice Depot, from where the successful contractor will build access tunnels approximately 3 km long and will continue using this method to the Nádraží Krč station. Only the less than 800-m-long track section between Olbrachtova and Nádraží Krč stations will be driven using the NATM method, which is already being used by contractors during the construction of the first section of the D Pankrác – Nové Dvory metro.

The construction of the second section of metro D will take a total of six years, and DDP would like to start it during the second half of next year. The DPP expects the completion of the entire metro Line D metro and its commissioning at the end of 2029.
