At Watson Island, on 15.04.2013, the TBM Harriet completed excavation of the second of two underwater tunnels as part of the EUR770 million project connecting the Port of Miami with nearby expressways. The EUR35 million TBM began its first drive at Watson Island, off downtown Miami, in November, 2011. It reached the port on 31.07.2012. It was then disassembled, turned around and reassembled for a return trip starting 29.10.2012. Paving is presently underway inside the tunnel. When completed in May, 2014, the tunnel will afford a direct route for freight to the port from nearby expressways such as Interstate 95, avoiding congested downtown streets.
