RFI and the Italian-Spanish consortium SIS celebrated the breakthrough of the Notarbartolo-Belgio tunnel for the Palermo railway. The Marisol TBM (diameter 9,40 m) completed the tunnel excavation from the Notarbartolo Palermo station to Belgio Street on the 19.09.2018. The tunnel will be used for the railway system linking Palermo to Punta Raisi. A 150 m section of the 2,131 m long tunnel had been excavated by traditional method and the TBM, which was launched in July 2017 finished the job. The team extracted 137.233 m3 of muck and installed 1421 rings, composed of 7 concrete segments.
On 30.05.2018, an agreement was signed in Rome between SIS and RFI to define the methods for completing the railway link. The agreement provides for the completion of the remaining civil works by 2019, with the exception of the Lazio stop, the De Gasperi/Belgio quay and the section of tunnel under Bernava alley, these will be built under a new contract.
