10/06/2008
Newsflash: New Books on Fundamentals of Tunnelling Machine Technology and Recommendations on ExcavationsResearch and Markets has announced the addition of Hardrock Tunnel Boring Machines to their offering. This 356-page book covers the fundamentals of tunnelling machine technology: drilling, tunnelling, waste removal and securing. It treats methods of rock classification for the machinery concerned as well as legal issues, using numerous example projects to reflect the state of technology, as well as problematic cases and solutions. The work is structured such that readers are led from the basics via the main functional elements of tunnelling machinery to the different types of machine, together with their areas of application and equipment. The result is an overview of current developments. The four authors are Bernhard Maidl, Professor for civil engineering, tunnelling and construction at the Ruhr University in Bochum since 1974 and founder of engineering firm Maidl und Maidl, Dr. Martin Herrenknecht, Leonhard Schmid, a planner of tunnelling projects and manager of a Swiss engineering firm, and Willy Ritz, a former manager of a tunnelling company in Switzerland. Close cooperation among the authors involved has created a book of equal interest to both experienced tunnellers and newcomers. The aim of these recommendations is to harmonize and further develop the methods, according to which excavations are prepared, calculated and carried out. They help simplify analysis of excavation enclosures, to unify load approaches and analysis procedures, to guarantee the stability and serviceability of the excavation structure and its individual components, and to find out an economic design of the excavation structure. The book contains all relevant information for building pits and represents a textbook for structural engineers. In addition, the book covers issues such as soil pressure values and distribution, calculation techniques for horizontal timber sheeting, sheet pile and in-situ concrete walls, specific building pit examples, ultimate bearing capacity calculations, and measuring and monitoring of pit structures.
