News from Calgary's Green LRT line

31/01/2022

The Green Line LRT is the largest infrastructure project in Calgary’s history, with EUR 3.44 bn (CAD4.9 bn) in unprecedented investments from the Government of Canada (33.47%), Government of Alberta (34.69%) and City of Calgary (31.84%). The 46 km Green Line will be built in stages as funding becomes available.

On 16/06/2020 the Calgary City Council approved the Administration’s Green Line recommendation on the updated Stage 1 alignment: the southern leg from Shepard up until 16th Avenue NW, with 15 stations on 20 km of the new track. Stage 1 of the Green Line LRT will provide seamless connections with the existing Red and Blue LRT lines and four MAX BRT routes. The Stage 1 will be built in 2 phases aligning with Council direction to build the Green Line in a stage-gate project approach.

Phase 1 from Shepard to Eau Claire will build:

  • 13 stations
  • 18 km of total LRT track
  • 3 park and ride facilities at Shepard, Douglas Glen and Lynnwood/Millican stations
  • 1 km of elevated track between 26 Avenue S.E. station and Inglewood/Ramsay station
  • 1.5 km tunnel under Beltline and Downtown (6 Street S.E. along 11 Avenue to 2 Street S.W. at the planned Eau Claire Promenade)
  • Elbow River LRT bridge between Inglewood and Beltline
  • 1 LRV maintenance and storage facility at Shepard station

Initially the segment running at-grade from Shepard to Ramsay and the underground segment from Ramsay to Eau Claire were going to be bid on for separate contracts. Now, the city is going to combine the two segments in a revised procurement process. Preparations are underway for Phase 1 RFQ and RFP processes. Phase 1 is the most technically complex portion and allows for easier expansion both North and South.

Phase 2 from Eau Claire to 16 Avenue N. will build:

•              The Bow River LRT bridge between Eau Claire and Samis Road N.E.

•              2 km of total LRT track

•              2 stations

Construction on the segment north of the Bow River to 16 Avenue N will be contingent on the ability to build the Shepard to Eau Claire segment on-budget.

On June 2, 2021 the Green Line Board announced the conclusion of the provincial review of the Green Line project.

With the alignment of all funding partners in July 2021 and a redefined procurement strategy, construction began in fall 2021 on the multi-year utility relocations in the Beltline/Downtown.  Click here for tunnelbuilder archive and for further information visit https://www.calgary.ca/green-line.html and  https://majorprojects.alberta.ca/details/Green-Line-LRT-Stage-1/873. 04/22.
