The MMRC (Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation ) has completed 15-16% of the civil construction for the Mumbai Metro Line 3, the first underground metro line in Mumbai/Bombay.
The Line 3, whose construction started on November 2016, will connect Cuffe Parade business district in the far south to the Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ) in the north-central with 26 underground and one at-grade stations.
Construction works are divided into
18 main packages. The 7 packages about tunnels &stations, awarded to five contractors in 2016, will need the use of 17 TBMs supplied by
Terratec,
Robbins, Herrenknecht and STEC. The TBMs were named after rivers flowing in Maharashtra: Godavari, Krishna, Surya, Tanasa, Tapi, Vaitarna and Wainganga.
On 15.02.2018 the TBM Vaitarna-1 of Package UGC02 (CST-Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Mumbai Central) became the first TBM to commence its main drive. The TBM will be used to dig a tunnel from launching shaft in Azad Maidan towards Mumbai Central it was launched on the 04.12.2017.
On 15.02.2018 Wainganga-3, the third TBM of Package UGC07, arrived at Mumbai port. The TBM will be lowered soon for its initial drive towards CSIA International Airport.
On 13.02.2018 the TBM Tansa-1 part of Package UGC03 (Mumbai Central to Worli) has been unloaded at the Port. It will soon be transported to its launching shaft near the Science Museum, from where it will drive the tunnel between Science Museum and Worli station.
On 12.02.2018 the Wainganga-2 TBM of Package UGC07 arrived at Sariput Nagar ramp launching shaft. The TBM will be lowered soon for its initial drive towards SEEPZ station.
On 08.02.2018 Krishna-2, the second TBM of Package UGC04, has completed 75 m of tunneling is well on its way to completing the initial drive from Naya Nagar launching shaft.
Also on the 08.02.2018 Wainganga-1, the first TBM of Package UGC07 (Marol Naka to Car Depot), launched by the L&T-STEC JV on 08.01.2018, completed its temporary ring dismantling at its launch shaft in Pali Ground, Marol Naka. Preparation for backup gantry lowering and starting the main drive is now in full swing.
On 31.01.2018 the TBM Godavari-2 of Package UGC05 (BKC to Santacruz), was assembled at the launching shaft located in Vidya Nagri, getting ready for the initial drive towards the CSIA Domestic Airport.
On 25.01.2018 the TBM Krishna-1 of Package UGC04 (Naya Nagar to Dadar) is now under assembly getting ready for the main drive, this is post completing the initial drive of 120 m at the launching shaft in Mahim.
On the 19.01.2018 the TBM Godavari-1 of Package UGC06, began its launch at Vidya Nagri launching shaft, this TBM will be used for building a 2.9 km long tunnel between Vidya Nagri and CSIA Domestic Airport.
On 07.01.2018 Vaitarna-2, the second TBM of Package UGC02 (Azad maidan-Mumbai Central) was lowered in the Azad maidan shaft for its north bound drive towards Mumbai Central.
The entire tunnelling activity is expected to be completed within the next two years and the project is expected to be completed as per the schedule by December 2021.
