More safety of the Frejus trans-European tunnel
15/04/2013
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has made a tangible commitment to the cross-border Frejus Tunnel project in the form of a EUR120 million loan. It will enable a second tube to be built alongside the existing tunnel connecting Piedmont to Savoie. This will allow traffic flow using one lane in each tunnel, with the second lane for emergency use. The system will be equipped with efficient safety systems in accordance with the new EU standards which come into force in 2014. The two tunnels, at a separation distance of around 50 m, will be linked by 34 x 100 sq m emergency shelters. Five vehicle cross-passages will enable emergency teams and equipment to be deployed between the tunnels. Click
