Melbourne desalination plant tunnels underwayTwo Herrenknecht 4.8 m-diameter TBMs equipped with VMT guidance systems are at work on the fourth, and largest, desalination plant to be built in Australia. The new Wonthaggi plant will provide 150 billion litres/year of drinking water to Melbourne and Geelong from end-2011. The 1.2 km-long intake tunnel at Wonthaggi has advanced 130 m, and the 1.5 km-long outfall tunnel is about to start.
