On the 05/10/2020 at the Lonato del Garda (BS) shipyard, the Cepav Due consortium, made up of Saipem (59%), Pizzarotti (27.27%) and Icm, the former Maltauro (13.64%), started work on the HS/HC Brescia East - Verona railway line with the inauguration of the 10 m diameter TBM Martina, which will build the Lonato tunnel. The work was commissioned by RFI, while High Surveillance and Works Management were entrusted to Italferr.
The Brescia East-Verona HS/HC Brescia line, is being built mostly alongside the A4 Milan-Venice motorway. The railway line, crosses the Lombardy and Veneto Regions, 11 municipalities in the provinces of Brescia, Verona and Mantua (the latter for road works only) and foresees the construction of a railway line of about 48 km, including the 2.2 km of the Verona Freight interconnection with the Verona - Brenner railway axis. A total of 4 viaducts, 15 overpasses, 4 natural tunnels for a total of 6.6 km and 17 artificial tunnels for a total of 10.2 km will be built.
The main works are:-
- the Lonato tunnel (7950 m) in the municipality of Lonato del Garda (BS);
- the Frassino tunnels (3360 m) in Peschiera del Garda (VR);
- the San Giorgio tunnel (3708 m) in the municipality of Sona (VR);
- the viaducts on the rivers Chiese (377 m) and Mincio (320 m long).
The completion of the Milan - Verona line, will make it possible to reduce interference between the various transport flows, making traffic flow more fluid and increasing traffic capacity. It will also improve the regularity and punctuality of both long-distance and regional services as well as freight transport.
