Martin Herrenknecht becomes first European MoleThe Moles Award 2009 has gone to Dr Martin Herrenknecht for his extraordinary service to the heavy construction industry, and in particular for his efforts in the development and innovation of mechanized tunnelling technology, and for the establishment and development of a world-renowned mechanical engineering enterprise, see www.herrenknecht.com. Dr Herrenknecht is the first European resident to receive this award.Established in 1936, the Moles is composed of individuals now or formerly engaged in tunnel, subway, sewer, foundation, marine, sub-aqueous or other heavy construction projects. More from www.themoles.info Membership is limited to 538 active members who, upon retirement, may apply for Emeritus status. In 1950, ex-president Herbert Hoover was labelled the Grand Old Mole at a ceremony at which Dwight Eisenhower was the principal speaker, and was presented with honorary membership. Speakers at similar events over the years have included Richard Nixon, Tip O'Neill, Edward Koch and Mario Cuomo. The Moles also throw an annual clambake, and host a student's day, generally in New York.At the award ceremony, Dr Herrenknecht identified the North and South American markets as among the most important for the company, with Herrenknecht strengthening its investment in new plant capacities and employees in the coming years.
