Kanpur Metro - Second breakthrough on Moti Jheel-Nayaganj underground section

On the 17/01/2023 the Joint Venture Gulermak-Sam India reached an important milestone with the breakthrough of the Terratec TBM S92. The breakthrough happened at Nayaganj Station on the 3.62 km Moti Jheel-Nayaganj underground section (Package KNPCC-05) of the 32.4 km Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project. This section includes 4 stations at Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj.

The TBM is nicknamed Tatya after Tatya Tope and has a 6.52 m diameter and is 120 m in length. It was launched in August 2022 from Bada Chauraha Station and has now driven 1025m of the down-line tunnel.

TBM Nana (S93), which was launched in June 2022, from the shaft in Bada Chaurha has also driven 1025 m, to reach the Nayaganj station.  The two TBMs will be moved to the launch shaft at Chunniganj from the recovery shaft in Nayaganj, to head back to Bada Chaurha and complete the first section that is underground.

The JV Italferr (Italy)/Typsa (Spaun) has also been involved in the project since 2020. They are the General Consultant for the design, procurement and supervision of the works relative to the two Metro railway lines of Kanpur and Agra, in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Back in March 2022 Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC)  awarded to the Afcons-Sam India Consortium the section from Nayaganj to Transport Nagar with 3 cut & cover stations at Kanpur Central, Jhakarkatti and Transport Nagar (Package KNPCC-06)
