Italy/Veneto – Completion of the San Martino Buon Albergo Tunnel Excavation on the HS/HC Verona-Vicenza Line

14/02/2025

The excavation of the San Martino Buon Albergo tunnel, a key structure on the HS/HC Verona-Vicenza railway line, has been successfully completed. The tunnel, located in San Martino Buon Albergo in the province of Verona, spans approximately 2 km in length, over 10 meters in width, and has an internal height of 7 meters. It was constructed using the Top-Down method, which minimizes surface impact while ensuring stability and safety during excavation.

This marks a significant milestone in the construction of the first functional lot of the HS/HC Verona-Vicenza section, which is part of the broader AV/AC Verona-Padua high-speed railway line. With this achievement, the project has now reached 60% physical completion.

The new railway line is one of the infrastructure projects financed under the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) and is an integral part of the Mediterranean Core Corridor. This corridor will connect the ports of southern Spain with the Ukrainian border, passing through southern France, northern Italy, Slovenia, and a section in Croatia. The project will enhance Italy’s connectivity with the rest of Europe and strengthen the trans-European transport network.

Construction of the HS/HC Verona-Padua line is progressing in functional phases. The first phase, the Verona-Bivio Vicenza section, currently under construction, extends 44.2 km. The second phase will focus on the Vicenza Crossing, while the third phase, currently in the design stage, will cover the Vicenza-Padua section. Click  it/271 for the tunnelbuilder archive and visithttps://www.rfi.it. 07/25.
